Wines from the Black Sea coast

The Black Sea coast area is also known as the Eastern Wine-Wine Region and literally represents the Black Sea coastline and the region whose climate is conditioned by it. The East Bulgarian region includes three sub-regions. The white sandy beaches make it an attractive tourist destination, and the sea climate leads to a soft, warm and long autumn. The climate creates favorable conditions for the accumulation of enough sugars in the grapes, which results in fine white semi-dry wines.

Dimyat is the second most planted white variety in the country and is situated mostly on the Black Sea coast, where is the largest variety of white varieties. Many say the variety is native to Serbia, but the legend says it was carried there by the Crusaders. The DNA test reveals that Dimy is a cross between the French variety Guais Blanc and another unknown grape. So the legend is probably true.

Rkatsiteli is the most planted white grape variety in Bulgaria. It comes from Georgia, is grown in the Soviet Union and brought to Bulgaria during the communist years. This variety is very acidic, so it remains on the vine as long as possible to concentrate sugar and balance the finished wine. It can be of bronze color and sweet to taste, with flavor and taste of honey, caramel, nuts and canned fruits.

Sauvignon Blanc ranks fifth in white wine plantings in France but produces excellent grapes in the Black Sea region of Bulgaria. The reason for this is that, in a cooler climatic condition, the grapes have a stronger taste and the wine produced is of very high quality. In a warmer climate, pleasant, refreshing but acidic wines are produced. It is a very important component for making different blends of white wines.
