Wines from the Rose Valley

The Rose Valley, also known as the sub-Balkan wine-growing region, is located just south of the Balkan Mountains. It is famous for the rose industry, because 85% of the world's rose oil is produced in the valley, and for wine it is mostly focused on white varieties.

On the southern slopes of Stara Planina and in the valley between it and Sredna Gora are grown mainly the popular variety Red Misket, Riesling, Rkatsiteli, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Here the emphasis is on the production of white dry and semi-dry wines, red and aromatised wines are not typical. The wines have a pleasant fruity aroma, a fresh and harmonious taste.

Like Merlot, it is very resistant to disease, and has the upward growth of Cabernet. It is capricious because it has to be deeply pruned and the first years do not yield a harvest. The fruits are white, medium and ovate. However, when exposed to sun, they change their color to golden-red. The wines of the variety Raccocite are well balanced but have poor taste characteristics.

Rkatsiteli are supposed to grow very well, but the most famous of the region's wines is of the Red Misket variety grown in its subregion - the Sungurlar Valley.

It may sound misleading, but Red Misket is actually used to produce white wine. And not only - one of the best varieties of white wines in Bulgaria is the Red Misket. It has a very varied fruit flavor, a strong and memorable residual taste and soft texture. The grapes have a pink envelope and is actually a cross between Dimyat and Riesling. The wine is straw-yellow, sometimes with a slight hue of green and usually dry. Instead of being named after a variety, wine is more likely to be called by another name.
